Short answer

Early mastitis symptoms may include a tender, hot, swollen area of one breast, breast pain, redness, and flu-like feelings.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How mastitis can begin

Mastitis is inflammation of breast tissue. It often develops during breastfeeding and may affect one breast, with a firm or painful area, warmth, swelling, or skin redness. Feverishness, chills, tiredness, and body aches can occur. Breast inflammation can have more than one cause, so symptoms alone do not establish whether infection is present.

A blocked or poorly draining area, pressure from a tight bra, changes in feeding, or damage to the nipple can contribute. Breast pain can also have other causes, so a persistent or unusual change needs assessment.

What to do early

Continue breastfeeding or expressing if you can do so comfortably; sudden stopping can worsen fullness. Feed responsively, check that the baby is well positioned, and avoid forceful massage or excessive pumping, which may irritate inflamed tissue. Rest, drink to thirst, use a cool pack between feeds, and wear a supportive but non-tight bra. A lactation consultant can help correct latch and feeding technique.

Use pain relief only if it is suitable for you and compatible with breastfeeding; a pharmacist or clinician can advise. Do not put harsh products on cracked nipples.

When to seek care

Contact a clinician promptly if you feel feverish, develop chills or worsening redness, or do not start improving with supportive care. Seek urgent assessment if you become very unwell, feel faint, develop a rapidly enlarging swelling, or notice pus. A clinician may assess for infection or a breast abscess and decide whether medicine or drainage is needed.

Questions for your doctor

Could this be inflammation, infection, or an abscess? Should I continue breastfeeding? What pain relief is suitable? Does my baby’s latch need checking? When should I return if symptoms do not improve?

Questions people ask

Can mastitis happen without a fever?

Yes. Breast inflammation may begin with local pain, warmth, swelling, or redness before feverish symptoms appear.

Should breastfeeding stop during mastitis?

Usually, continuing comfortable feeding or expressing is discussed, because abrupt stopping can increase breast fullness; seek individual advice if feeding is very painful.
