First Signs of TSS

Toxic shock syndrome is a rare but serious reaction to toxins made by certain bacteria. It can affect several body systems quickly. Symptoms may include low blood pressure, faintness, headache, red eyes, sore throat, peeling skin later in the illness, or severe weakness. The illness may be linked with a wound, skin infection, recent surgery or menstrual product use, but no single cause is present in every case.

Treat sudden, severe illness as an emergency. Remove a tampon or menstrual cup if relevant, do not insert another, and seek emergency medical care immediately. Tell clinicians about recent wounds, procedures, infections and medicines. Do not wait for a rash or try to manage suspected TSS at home.

Call local emergency services for collapse, confusion, breathing difficulty, severe weakness, a rapidly spreading rash, or fever with vomiting and dizziness. Even without collapse, a sudden flu-like illness that is getting worse needs immediate assessment because deterioration can be rapid.

Ask what source of infection was found, which warning signs require a return to hospital, how to care for any wound, and when a follow-up GP consultation is needed.
