Fingers stiff and hurt to bend: what to know

Short answer

Fingers that are stiff and hurt to bend may reflect joint inflammation, hand osteoarthritis, a tendon problem such as trigger finger, or an injury, so the pattern and timing matter.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Timing, affected fingers, swelling, clicking, and recent injury
Avoid
Forceful bending or pulling a locked finger straight

What the pattern can mean

Pain at a finger joint, especially with use, can occur with Hand Osteoarthritis. Morning stiffness, warmth, or swelling in several joints can occur with Rheumatoid Arthritis. A finger that catches, clicks, or locks as it bends points toward Trigger Finger. A slowly tightening cord or a finger being drawn toward the palm can occur with Dupuytren's Contracture. A recent knock, cut, heavy grip, or repetitive task changes the possibilities. Finger Stiffness is a useful symptom description, but it does not identify one cause by itself.

What you can do now

Rest from forceful gripping while keeping the finger gently moving through a comfortable range. Warm water may make movement easier; a cool pack wrapped in cloth can soothe recent swelling. Keep the hand elevated if it is puffy, and remove rings before swelling increases. Avoid forcing a locked or very painful finger straight. Note which fingers are involved, whether symptoms are worse on waking, and any clicking, numbness, injury, or fever. A clinician can examine the joints and tendons and decide whether imaging or hand therapy is useful.

When to seek care

Arrange medical assessment if pain or stiffness persists, keeps returning, limits work or sleep, or affects several fingers. Seek prompt care after a significant injury, a deep wound, a bite, or a finger that looks deformed. Get urgent help for a hot, rapidly swollen finger with fever, severe pain, spreading redness, blue or pale colour, new numbness, or inability to move it.

Questions for your doctor

Could the pain be coming from a joint, tendon, or recent injury? What movement should I continue, and what should I avoid? Do the number of affected fingers or morning symptoms suggest a broader inflammatory problem? Would a splint, hand therapy, or examination of the other hand help?

Questions people ask

Does painful finger stiffness always mean arthritis?

No. Tendon catching, injury, inflammation, and other hand conditions can also cause painful stiffness.

Should I keep bending a painful finger?

Gentle comfortable movement is usually preferable to complete stillness, but stop if pain sharply increases or the finger is injured.
