Fingers and hand going numb: what should you know?

Numbness in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger can fit Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Symptoms centred on the little finger and neighbouring side of the hand can relate to Cubital Tunnel Syndrome. Neck pain with symptoms travelling down the arm may occur with Cervical Radiculopathy. Arm heaviness, colour change, or symptoms linked to shoulder position may require assessment for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Hand Numbness can also have non-orthopaedic causes, so the full history matters.

Note which fingers feel numb, whether symptoms wake you, and what wrist, elbow, neck, or shoulder positions bring them on. Avoid leaning on the elbow or keeping the wrist sharply bent for long periods. Take breaks from repetitive gripping and change your working position. Do not use a numb hand around heat or sharp tools because reduced sensation can hide an injury. A clinician can check strength, sensation, reflexes, and the neck and upper limb.

Seek emergency help for sudden numbness with facial drooping, speech difficulty, severe weakness, confusion, or trouble walking. Get prompt assessment if numbness follows a significant injury, rapidly worsens, affects the whole arm, or comes with a cold, pale, blue, or severely painful hand. Persistent symptoms, dropping objects, or hand weakness also warrant a clinical review; Carpal Tunnel Release is one possible treatment only after the cause is established.
