Finger yeast infection: what to know

Vaginal thrush is an overgrowth of Candida affecting the vagina and vulval area. Typical symptoms include itching, soreness, irritation, and a change in discharge. A problem on a finger may instead involve broken skin, irritation, eczema, or another infection. A red, warm, swollen, painful finger, cracking around the nail, or drainage needs an examination rather than assuming it is thrush.

Symptoms can overlap with other vaginal conditions, and discharge or vulval discomfort is not enough to confirm the cause. Tell a clinician where the symptoms are, how they began, whether there is a rash or wound, and whether you have vaginal itching, discharge, or vulval pain.

Keep a sore finger clean and dry, avoid picking at the skin, and pause products that sting or irritate it. Do not apply vaginal antifungal cream to a finger unless a clinician has recommended that use. For vaginal symptoms, a clinician or pharmacist can advise whether antifungal treatment for thrush is suitable and whether testing is needed. Complete any recommended treatment as directed.

Arrange prompt medical care for a finger that is rapidly becoming more painful, hot, swollen, or difficult to move, or if redness is spreading, pus is present, or you feel feverish. Seek assessment for vaginal symptoms that are new, severe, recurrent, associated with sores or bleeding, or not improving with advised treatment. Urgent care is appropriate if severe pain or marked illness develops.

Ask whether the finger problem looks fungal, bacterial, or irritant, whether a swab or other test is needed, and which product is safe for that body area. If vaginal symptoms are present, ask how they fit with vaginal discharge, vaginal itching, or vulval pain.
