Fine needle aspiration of a neck lymph node

Neck lymph nodes can enlarge during infections and inflammatory conditions, and they can also be involved in cancer. The sample may show reactive immune cells, infection-related changes, lymphoma-related features, metastatic cells, or an inadequate specimen. The presence of a neck lump does not by itself establish its cause.

The clinician may use ultrasound to locate the node and avoid nearby structures. Results are interpreted with the node's location, duration of enlargement, examination, and imaging. If lymphoma is a concern, a larger tissue sample may be needed because cell appearance alone may not provide enough information.

Bring a list of medicines and mention recent infections, dental problems, fever, night sweats, unexplained weight change, or swallowing and voice symptoms. Ask whether to change any blood-thinning medicine; make no adjustment without instructions from the prescribing team.

After the procedure, follow the dressing advice and keep the site clean. Confirm how the pathology result will be shared and whether additional imaging or tissue sampling could follow.

Contact the clinic for persistent bleeding, increasing tenderness, spreading redness, discharge, or a growing lump at the puncture site. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, sudden voice change, marked neck swelling, or faintness.

Ask which lymph node is being targeted, whether ultrasound guidance will be used, what the report can and cannot establish, and what test follows an inconclusive sample.
