What should you know about fibrous cellulite?

Short answer
Fibrous cellulite describes a dimpled skin appearance linked with firm connective-tissue bands that tether the skin to deeper tissue; treatment depends on the pattern and the person's goals.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Structure
- Connective-tissue bands can tether skin and contribute to dimpling.
- Assessment
- Tethering, laxity, and fat distribution may all influence appearance.
- Recovery
- Tenderness, swelling, or bruising depends on the procedure used.
What makes cellulite feel firm
Cellulite forms when fat compartments, connective-tissue bands, skin elasticity, and the surface contour interact. When bands pull downward while surrounding tissue presses upward, dimples or an uneven texture can appear. A firmer or more tethered pattern may be discussed as fibrous cellulite, although names used in clinics are not always identical.
Cellulite is a cosmetic texture concern rather than an infection. A new painful, hot, one-sided lump or rapidly changing swelling is different and should be assessed instead of being assumed to be cellulite.
How treatment is chosen
A clinician should assess whether the main issue is tethering, skin laxity, fat volume, or a combination. Options may include procedures that release bands, stimulate remodeling, or change the surrounding tissue. The choice depends on the body area, skin quality, bruising tendency, medicines, and the amount of downtime you can manage.
Before treatment, disclose bleeding problems, medicines, skin infection, pregnancy, and previous procedures in the area. Afterward, follow wound and compression instructions if provided, expect temporary tenderness or bruising with some procedures, and protect any treated skin while it recovers.
When to seek care
Contact the provider if pain is worsening, redness spreads, the area becomes hot, drainage appears, or swelling is unexpectedly severe. Urgent assessment is appropriate for fever with a rapidly worsening area, severe allergic symptoms, or sudden marked swelling. A persistent new lump should also be examined.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what structure is causing the dimpling, whether the proposed procedure releases bands or tightens skin, how many areas can be treated in one visit, what bruising and downtime to expect, and how recurrence or maintenance will be handled.

Questions people ask
Is fibrous cellulite a medical emergency?
Cellulite itself is usually a cosmetic texture concern, but sudden pain, heat, redness, a new lump, or rapid swelling needs medical assessment.
Can exercise remove fibrous cellulite?
Activity may support overall muscle tone and health, but it may not release connective-tissue bands that create tethered dimples.
