What should you know about fibroadenoma and breast cancer?

Fibroadenomas are solid breast lumps made from glandular and connective tissue. They may feel smooth, firm, and mobile, but touch alone cannot identify every breast change. A fibroadenoma is not the same as breast cancer, and a known benign result should be interpreted in the context of its imaging and pathology.

A new lump, a change in a known lump, nipple or skin changes, discharge, or an enlarged underarm node deserves review. Most breast lumps are not cancer, yet cancer can present as a breast lump; the direction matters: breast cancer may present with a lump, but a lump does not establish cancer.

Arrange an appointment for a new or changing breast finding. Your clinician may recommend a mammogram, ultrasound, breast MRI, or breast biopsy according to your age, symptoms, examination, and earlier results. Imaging shows structure; a biopsy can examine cells when tissue confirmation is needed.

Bring earlier reports and mention family history, pregnancy or breastfeeding, hormone medicines, and how long the change has been present. If cancer is diagnosed, further tests such as gene-expression testing or genomic tumour profiling may help guide treatment choices in selected situations.

Seek prompt review for a rapidly changing lump, skin dimpling, a newly inverted nipple, bloody discharge, persistent one-sided swelling, or an underarm lump. Urgent care is needed for severe infection-like symptoms, marked redness with fever, or rapidly worsening pain.

Ask whether the finding has features of a fibroadenoma, which imaging is appropriate, and whether biopsy is needed. Ask how the result will be followed, what change should trigger an earlier review, and whether family history affects your assessment.
