What is a normal fibroadenoma size?

Fibroadenomas can be small or more prominent, and their dimensions can differ between people. A measurement is only one part of the assessment: the lump’s borders, firmness, mobility, position, and change over time also matter. A larger lump is not automatically cancer, and a small lump is not automatically a fibroadenoma. A new or changing breast lump should therefore be assessed rather than judged by size at home.

During an examination, note when you first noticed the lump and whether it feels different at another point in the menstrual cycle. A breast ultrasound can measure the area and describe its internal features. If the appearance is unclear or the lump changes, a breast biopsy may be discussed. Stable findings may lead to planned monitoring. If size causes discomfort, stretching of the skin, visible asymmetry, or persistent concern, breast lump excision is an option to discuss; the choice depends on the whole clinical picture.

Seek timely review if a lump grows, becomes fixed, or is joined by dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, a new change in breast shape, redness, warmth, swelling, or fever. Do not wait for it to reach a particular measurement before arranging an assessment.

Ask how the measurement compares with the previous examination, whether the ultrasound appearance is reassuring, when review is due, and which change would lead to biopsy or removal. Ask whether symptoms make treatment more useful than observation.
