Fever and sensitivity to light: what to know

Bright rooms or screens may feel unusually uncomfortable when you have a fever, headache, tiredness, or irritated eyes. Viral illnesses such as Common Cold, COVID-19, or Chickenpox can include fever and headache; other symptoms help a clinician judge the pattern.

Light sensitivity alongside a severe or rapidly worsening headache is more concerning than mild discomfort alone. Fever can also occur with skin infection such as Cellulitis, or respiratory illnesses such as Acute Bronchitis and Bronchiolitis. A symptom does not identify one condition by itself.

Rest in a dim, quiet room and reduce screen glare. Sip fluids regularly, choose light clothing, and check your temperature with the same thermometer method each time. Do not drive if light or headache affects your vision or concentration.

Use fever medicine only as directed on its label and check with a pharmacist if you take other medicines, are pregnant, or are caring for a child. Note when the fever and light sensitivity began, associated symptoms, and any new medicines or travel exposures.

Seek emergency help for difficulty waking, confusion, a seizure, trouble breathing, fainting, a stiff neck, a severe headache, or a rash that does not fade when pressed. Get prompt medical advice if light sensitivity is marked, symptoms are worsening, or you cannot keep fluids down.

Arrange clinical review when fever persists, returns after improving, or occurs in a young infant, an older adult, or someone with reduced immunity. A clinician may examine your eyes, neck, skin, hydration, and other symptoms.
