Fever for a few days: what to know

A short fever may occur while the immune system responds to a respiratory, stomach, urinary, skin, or other infection. Duration does not identify the cause by itself. Record the temperature, how it was measured, and whether it improves between episodes. Also note cough, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhoea, pain when passing urine, rash, ear pain, or local swelling. The person’s age, pregnancy, immune health, and long-term conditions change the threshold for review.

Offer frequent fluids, rest, light clothing, and small meals if tolerated. Use a fever reducer only according to the label and never give a child a product intended for another age group. Avoid cold baths and rubbing alcohol on the skin. Keep distance from vulnerable household members when a contagious illness is possible, and wash hands often. If the fever is not improving or keeps returning, contact a clinician.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, confusion, a seizure, stiff neck, severe dehydration, severe pain, a rapidly spreading rash, or a person who is difficult to wake. Arrange prompt advice for a young infant, pregnancy, weakened immunity, significant heart or lung disease, or recent travel. A fever that worsens after initial improvement also deserves review.

Ask what symptoms point toward a particular source, whether testing is useful, how much fluid is appropriate, and when normal activities can resume. Share the temperature log and medicine times.
