Short answer

Fever and throwing up can occur with infections, but repeated vomiting can cause dehydration and needs closer monitoring, especially in children and older adults.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the symptoms can mean

Fever and vomiting commonly appear during an acute infection, including an illness affecting the airways or digestive system. Bronchiolitis and Croup may cause vomiting after coughing, particularly in young children. COVID-19 and other infections can also disturb appetite and the stomach. Vomiting may instead relate to food irritation, migraine, medication, or another condition, so the pattern matters. Abdominal pain, diarrhoea, cough, rash, urinary symptoms, and recent food or travel exposure can help a clinician narrow the possibilities.

Fluids and comfort

After vomiting, wait briefly, then offer small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink rather than a large glass at once. Continue breastfeeding when relevant. Once fluids stay down, try plain foods in small amounts and avoid alcohol, rich meals, and unfamiliar remedies. Rest, monitor urine and alertness, and use fever medicine only according to the label or professional advice. Do not give children anti-vomiting medicine unless a clinician recommends it.

When to seek care

Seek emergency help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a stiff neck, confusion, breathing difficulty, blood or green material in vomit, a seizure, or inability to wake normally. Get prompt medical advice for repeated vomiting, very little urine, dry mouth, no tears, persistent dizziness, or inability to keep even small sips down. Infants, pregnant people, older adults, and people with significant medical conditions may need earlier review.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which fluids are appropriate, how to judge dehydration, whether an examination or testing is needed, and which medicines are safe with your usual treatment. Report the number and appearance of vomits, urine changes, pain location, fever pattern, and recent exposures.
