Fever and headache treatment at home

Short answer
Home treatment for mild fever and headache focuses on fluids, rest, a comfortable temperature and correctly used medicine while you watch for deterioration.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Start with
- Fluids, rest and a cool, comfortable room
- Medicine check
- Read active ingredients and label directions
What home care can and cannot do
Supportive measures can ease discomfort while the underlying cause settles, but they do not diagnose the illness. Fever and headache may occur with a common cold, COVID-19, dehydration or heat exhaustion. Nasal pressure from chronic sinusitis can contribute to headache, while allergic rhinitis commonly causes congestion and sneezing rather than fever. A new rash, strong body aches or relevant travel history changes the assessment and should be shared with a clinician.
A safer home routine
Sip water or another suitable fluid regularly, rest in a cool room and use light clothing. Avoid strenuous exercise and alcohol. A lukewarm wash may feel comfortable; avoid extreme cooling that causes shivering. If you use a fever or pain medicine, follow the package directions, check the active ingredients in combination products, and ask a pharmacist about suitability for children, pregnancy, liver or kidney disease, ulcers or regular medicines. Do not take more than the label allows.
When home treatment is not enough
Call emergency services for confusion, collapse, seizure, a stiff neck, sudden severe headache, breathing difficulty, new weakness or trouble speaking. Seek prompt clinical advice if you cannot keep fluids down, urination becomes very limited, symptoms are worsening, or fever and headache do not begin to improve. Do not rely on home care alone after substantial heat exposure or relevant travel if you feel increasingly unwell.
Questions to take along
Ask which medicine and dose are suitable for you, how to track hydration, and what duration should prompt review. Bring the names of medicines taken and describe the headache location, severity, onset and any sensitivity to light.
