What should you know about a fetal well-being growth scan?

The sonographer measures parts of your baby's body and compares the pattern of growth with the stage of pregnancy. The scan may also look at the placenta, amniotic fluid and the baby's position.

Doppler ultrasound can assess blood flow through the umbilical cord and selected vessels. The clinician may observe breathing movements, body movements and heart activity. These findings are considered together; one measurement does not give the whole picture.

Follow the appointment instructions about eating, drinking and bringing previous scan information. Wear clothing that allows access to your abdomen. During the appointment, gel is placed on your skin and a probe is moved across the abdomen. You may feel pressure but should not need to stay in one position for the entire scan.

Ask when and how the results will be discussed. If a measurement needs checking, the team may arrange another scan or review the findings with your maternity clinician.

Contact your maternity team promptly for reduced or changed fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, painful contractions, severe abdominal pain or a severe headache with visual changes. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether a scan is already scheduled.

You could ask what growth pattern was seen, whether the placenta and fluid appear reassuring, whether Doppler measurements were needed, and when you should expect the report or next appointment.
