Pain at the hand thumb is a different problem and may involve the joint, tendon, or skin. De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis typically causes pain on the thumb side of the wrist that worsens with gripping or moving the thumb, rather than pain confined to a toenail.

Look for redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, a dark mark under the nail, colour change, altered nail shape, or pain with pressure. Take a clear photo and note recent footwear, injury, manicure or pedicure, and activity.

Seek prompt assessment for spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, severe throbbing pain, or a wound.
