Pressure in the eyes with a headache: what to know

A blocked or inflamed nose and sinus passages can create pressure around the eyes and forehead. Allergic Rhinitis may add sneezing, itching, and clear discharge; Chronic Sinusitis can cause longer-lasting congestion and facial pressure. A Common Cold or COVID-19 may bring headache with tiredness, fever, cough, or sore throat. Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion can cause headache, thirst, weakness, dizziness, or heavy sweating. Prolonged screen use, an uncorrected vision problem, poor sleep, and muscle tension can also make the eyes feel strained. Generalised Anxiety Disorder may increase muscle tension and awareness of discomfort. These symptoms do not point to one diagnosis by themselves.

Rest your eyes from close work, adjust screen brightness and position, and sleep if possible. Drink fluids regularly and move to a cool place if heat or sweating preceded the headache. Saline nasal rinsing may ease congestion when used with safe water and clean equipment. Avoid rubbing painful eyes. Ask a pharmacist or clinician which pain relief is suitable for you, especially if you have other conditions or take regular medicines. Arrange an eye or medical review if symptoms keep returning or vision remains affected.

Seek emergency help for a sudden, severe headache, new weakness or numbness, confusion, fainting, seizure, stiff neck with fever, or trouble speaking. Get urgent eye care for sudden vision loss, a very red painful eye, halos around lights, marked light sensitivity, or severe eye pain with vomiting. Heat-related confusion, collapse, or inability to drink also requires emergency care.

Ask whether sinus congestion, vision, hydration, heat exposure, medicines, or another cause best fits the pattern and whether your eyes need examination.
