Fatigue and pregnancy: what it can tell you

Early pregnancy can bring tiredness as the body adjusts to hormonal and circulatory changes. However, fatigue also follows poor sleep, emotional strain, dehydration, infection, dietary problems, or a change in routine. A missed period may add context, but symptoms alone cannot establish whether conception occurred.

If pregnancy is possible, consider the timing of your period and any medicines or supplements you take. Anaemia can also cause fatigue, especially with heavy periods, while COVID-19 and other illnesses may bring additional symptoms.

Use a home pregnancy test according to its instructions and repeat or seek clinical advice if the result is negative but your period remains absent. Until you know, avoid alcohol and check with a pharmacist or clinician before starting, stopping, or changing medicines. Rest, drink fluids, and eat regularly.

Seek urgent care for severe one-sided abdominal pain, heavy vaginal bleeding, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, or severe dizziness when pregnancy is possible. Arrange a medical review for persistent fatigue, breathlessness, palpitations, fever, or a test result that leaves you unsure about the next step.
