What should you know about fat transfer in cheeks?

During consultation, the clinician considers facial proportions, skin quality, existing volume, expressions and the donor area. Small amounts of fat are collected, prepared, and injected in layers to build a gradual cheek contour. The treatment may soften hollowing or support facial balance, but the final appearance depends on anatomy and how the graft heals.

Expect facial swelling, bruising, tenderness and temporary tightness. The cheeks can look fuller or less even before swelling settles. Small firm areas or differences between sides may need observation at follow-up, and your clinician should explain whether refinement could be considered.

Discuss medicines, allergies, skin conditions, dental work, previous facial procedures, smoking or vaping and any tendency to bruise. Ask which products and activities to pause. After treatment, sleep and wash as directed, avoid pressure and vigorous exercise until cleared, protect the skin from unnecessary sun exposure, and attend review appointments. Do not massage a treated area unless specifically instructed.

Contact the treatment team for increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, rapidly worsening swelling, wound problems or changes in vision. Sudden facial weakness, severe headache, chest pain or severe breathlessness requires emergency care. A persistent lump, marked asymmetry or skin colour change should be examined rather than managed with home treatment.
