Fast PCR test

PCR testing amplifies small amounts of genetic material so a laboratory can look for a target from a virus such as the one that causes COVID-19. A swab is commonly collected from the nose or throat, although the exact sample depends on the service. A rapid antigen test kit looks for viral proteins and uses a different method, so its timing and performance are not interchangeable with PCR. A result describes the sample at that time; it does not by itself predict how illness will develop.

Follow the collection instructions carefully and tell the tester about symptoms, recent exposure, and any relevant treatment advice. Avoid eating, drinking, smoking, or using nasal products beforehand only when the testing service instructs you to do so. Ask when and how the result will arrive, and follow local public-health or clinician advice while waiting. If the result is negative but symptoms continue or exposure was recent, ask whether repeat testing or clinical assessment is needed. A positive result should be discussed with the testing service or clinician for next steps.

Testing does not replace urgent assessment. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain or pressure, new confusion, inability to stay awake, or blue or grey lips. Contact a clinician promptly for worsening fever, dehydration, persistent symptoms, or if you are pregnant, immunocompromised, or managing a serious long-term condition and have possible COVID-19 symptoms.
