Fast-acting heartburn medicine: what to know

Heartburn is a burning feeling behind the breastbone caused by stomach contents moving upwards. Acid reflux is a common cause, but gastritis, a peptic ulcer, or a hiatus hernia can produce similar upper-abdominal or chest discomfort. Medicines differ: some neutralise acid, some form a barrier, and others reduce acid production for longer control. Relief of the burning does not identify the underlying cause.

A pharmacist can help choose an over-the-counter option and check for interactions with your regular medicines. Follow the product directions and avoid taking several acid products together unless advised. Smaller meals, remaining upright after eating, and identifying personal triggers may reduce episodes.
