Fainting while on your period

Short answer
Fainting during a period can be linked to pain, blood loss, dehydration, or a reflex drop in blood pressure, so the pattern should be assessed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it can mean
Strong menstrual pain can trigger a reflex that lowers heart rate or blood pressure. Heavy bleeding may reduce circulating blood volume and, over time, contribute to Anaemia. Fluid loss, vomiting, not eating, heat, or diarrhoea can add to the problem through Dehydration. Cramps, nausea, sweating, pallor, dizziness, and visual changes may come before a faint. Period timing is useful information, but it does not prove that menstruation is the only cause; heart rhythm conditions such as Atrial Fibrillation and low blood sugar may need consideration when other symptoms fit.
What to do when symptoms start
Lie flat with your legs raised, or sit on the floor if lying down is not possible. Use a cool place, loosen clothing, and ask someone to stay nearby. Once fully alert and able to swallow, drink water and eat a small snack. Do not stand quickly, drive, or take extra pain medicine beyond the label or your clinician’s advice. Note bleeding intensity, pain, clots, medicines, fluid intake, and whether the episode happened at another point in the cycle.
When to seek care
Seek emergency help for collapse with severe abdominal pain, possible pregnancy, very heavy bleeding, chest pain, breathlessness, a racing heartbeat, serious injury, confusion, or slow recovery. Arrange prompt review after a first faint, recurrent episodes, worsening period pain, fatigue between periods, or bleeding that interferes with daily activities. A clinician can check blood pressure, blood count, hydration, medicines, and other causes.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your bleeding or pain needs treatment, whether a blood count or iron assessment is appropriate, and whether your current pain relief is suitable. Share cycle dates, pad or tampon changes, clots, dizziness, diet, and any palpitations.
