Fainting while coughing

A severe cough can briefly change pressure in the chest and reduce blood flow to the brain. The risk may be greater with repeated coughing, breathing illness, smoking, dehydration, or some medicines. Dizziness, visual greying, weakness, and a sense of impending blackout can precede loss of awareness. The cough still needs an explanation: causes can include infection, asthma, reflux, allergies, or another lung problem. A clinician may also check for heart rhythm issues such as Atrial Fibrillation and review conditions including Dehydration or Anaemia.

Stop walking or driving and sit or lie on your side in a safe place. If you feel faint, lower yourself before awareness fades and ask someone to stay with you. After recovery, take slow breaths and sip fluid if swallowing is comfortable. Do not suppress a severe cough with someone else’s medicine, and avoid alcohol or activities where a sudden blackout could cause harm until assessed. Note what triggered the cough and whether you had wheezing, fever, chest pain, or sputum.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, blue lips, chest pain, coughing blood, a major injury, new neurological symptoms, prolonged confusion, or failure to wake normally. Seek prompt medical review after any cough-related faint, especially if it is the first event, the cough is persistent or worsening, or fainting occurs without a cough. A clinician may need to examine your lungs, heart, medicines, and oxygen level.

Ask whether the cough pattern suggests asthma, reflux, infection, or another cause, and whether you need heart rhythm or lung testing. Bring a list of medicines, smoking or vaping exposure, recent illness, and details about the episode and recovery.
