Facial swelling after laser treatment for rosacea

Laser energy can temporarily irritate treated skin, causing warmth, redness, tightness and puffiness. Swelling may be more noticeable around the eyes or cheeks. It should be discussed with the treating clinician if it is spreading, becoming more painful, or not settling as expected. A hot, increasingly tender area, drainage or fever can point to cellulitis rather than routine treatment irritation. Sudden swelling of the lips, tongue or throat may be angioedema or anaphylaxis, particularly if hives, wheezing or dizziness occur.

Follow the aftercare instructions from the laser clinic and contact them about any unexpected change. Keep the area clean, avoid rubbing or picking, and use only products they have approved. A cool, clean compress held gently against the skin can ease discomfort. Rest with your head raised if that is comfortable. Avoid heat, strenuous activity, sun exposure and unapproved creams until the clinician advises otherwise. Do not start an antihistamine, steroid or antibiotic without checking that it is suitable for you.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, throat tightness, tongue swelling, faintness, confusion or rapidly spreading facial swelling; these can be features of anaphylaxis and require emergency treatment. Seek same-day medical advice for severe pain, blistering, pus, fever, marked warmth, eye involvement or swelling that is rapidly increasing. If symptoms are mild but persist beyond the aftercare window, arrange a review with the treating clinician.

Ask which degree of swelling is expected for the laser used, when improvement should begin, which cleanser or medicine is safe, and whether a follow-up examination is needed. Tell the clinician about new products, medicines or foods used around the treatment, and show dated photographs if the appearance is changing.
