Facial hair graft: what to know

A clinician assesses the donor area, facial proportions, existing hair pattern, skin health, and the reason for sparse growth. Follicles are collected from a donor region and placed into tiny recipient sites at angles that follow natural beard growth. The number and placement of grafts depend on the desired shape and available donor hair. Existing patchiness from hair loss, scarring, or traction may need a separate diagnosis before a procedure is planned.

Discuss medicines, smoking, skin conditions, previous procedures, and your preferred beard outline during consultation. Follow instructions about washing, touching, exercise, and sun exposure after treatment. Small crusts, redness, swelling, and temporary shedding can occur during healing. New growth is gradual, so the final appearance is judged after the follicles have had time to cycle. Do not pick crusts or use unapproved products on the grafted skin.

Contact the treating team if pain is increasing rather than settling, redness is spreading, drainage develops, or you develop fever. Urgent assessment is needed for severe swelling around the eyes, breathing difficulty, or a widespread allergic reaction. A patch that becomes smooth, scarred, or increasingly inflamed also deserves review because the underlying skin problem may affect planning or healing.
