What should you know about facial CT scan?

Short answer
A facial CT scan uses X-rays to create cross-sectional images of facial bones and nearby structures, helping clinicians assess injury, disease or treatment needs.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the scan can show
A CT scanner combines multiple X-ray views into detailed slices. For the face, these images can show the cheekbones, jaw, eye sockets, nasal bones, sinuses and areas of swelling or abnormal tissue. A clinician may request the scan after trauma, for persistent sinus or facial symptoms, or to define an area that needs further evaluation. A CT image is one part of assessment and does not by itself establish a cancer diagnosis.
Some facial CT examinations use an injected contrast agent. This can help separate blood vessels or soft tissues from surrounding structures. Tell the team about previous reactions, kidney disease, thyroid conditions, pregnancy or a possibility of pregnancy before the appointment.
How to prepare
Follow the imaging service's instructions about food, drink and medicines. Remove metal objects around the head and neck, and keep still while the scanner takes its images. The scan is usually brief, but remaining still helps prevent blurred pictures. If contrast is planned, the team may ask about allergies and kidney health and may observe you briefly afterward.
When to seek care
Contact a clinician for facial swelling that persists, repeated nosebleeds, ongoing facial pain, changes in vision, a new lump or symptoms that do not settle. Seek urgent help after a serious injury, or for trouble breathing, severe bleeding, sudden vision loss, confusion or weakness. Emergency symptoms require immediate assessment rather than waiting for a scheduled scan.
Questions for your doctor
Ask why CT is being recommended, whether contrast will be used, how the result may change your care, when the report will be available, and whether MRI or tissue sampling could be considered.
Questions people ask
Does a facial CT scan hurt?
The scan itself is not usually painful. You need to lie still, and an injection may briefly feel warm if contrast is used.
Why might contrast be used?
Contrast can make selected blood vessels and soft-tissue differences easier to see. The imaging team will check whether it is suitable for you.
