Why Your Face Bruises Easily

A bruise forms when small blood vessels leak under the skin. Facial skin can show colour changes after a bump that seemed too minor to remember, and sun-damaged skin may be more delicate. Bruising can also be associated with medicines or supplements that affect clotting, nutritional problems, liver disease, or a platelet or clotting disorder. The pattern matters: note whether bruises are new, frequent, unusually large, or appearing in places without remembered injury. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice.

For a fresh bruise, use a wrapped cool pack for short periods and rest the area. Avoid pressing or massaging it, and protect the skin from further knocks. Keep a record of when bruises appear, their locations, possible injuries, and all medicines or supplements. A clinician may examine your skin and gums and decide whether blood tests are appropriate. Seek advice before cosmetic injections or procedures if bruising has recently changed, because the cause and medication list should be reviewed first.

Arrange medical review if bruising starts suddenly, keeps recurring, or comes with nosebleeds, bleeding gums, unusually heavy menstrual bleeding, tiredness, fever, or many tiny red-purple spots. Seek urgent care for a rapidly enlarging bruise, severe headache after a head injury, confusion, weakness, or bleeding that will not stop. Facial swelling around the eye after trauma also needs prompt assessment.
