Short answer

Red, itchy eyes often result from allergy or irritation, but pain, vision change, or injury needs prompt medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common clues
Itching, watering, redness, and exposure to an irritant or allergen
Avoid
Rubbing eyes, contact lenses during symptoms, and shared eye drops
Urgent warning
Pain, vision change, injury, or chemical exposure

What it may mean

Allergic conjunctivitis can make both eyes red, watery, and intensely itchy, sometimes alongside sneezing or a blocked nose. Allergic rhinitis may link the eye symptoms with nasal congestion. Dust mites, pets, pollen, smoke, cosmetics, contact lenses, and dry air can irritate the eye surface. Itching is a useful clue, but it does not identify one cause by itself. Sticky discharge, eyelid swelling, or symptoms starting in one eye can point to a different problem and deserve clinical advice if they persist.

What you can do now

Do not rub your eyes, because rubbing can further inflame the surface. Wash your hands, remove contact lenses, and use a clean cool compress over closed eyelids. Avoid the suspected trigger and keep pillowcases and bedding clean if dust is a concern. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether lubricating drops or allergy medication is suitable; do not share eye drops or use someone else’s prescription. Seek advice if symptoms are not settling or keep returning.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt medical assessment for moderate or severe eye pain, blurred or reduced vision, marked light sensitivity, a very swollen eyelid, or a feeling that something is stuck in the eye. Get urgent help after a chemical splash, eye injury, or sudden change in sight; rinse a chemical exposure with clean running water while seeking help. Fever with significant swelling around the eye also needs urgent attention.

Useful questions for a clinician

Ask: Could this be allergic conjunctivitis or another cause? Should I stop wearing my contact lenses? Which drops are appropriate for my symptoms? What warning signs should make me return urgently? Mention when the redness began, whether one or both eyes are affected, any discharge, new products, and known allergies.
