Eyes itchy and sensitive to light: what should you know?

Allergic conjunctivitis can make the eyes itchy, watery and swollen. Allergic rhinitis, house dust mite allergy and pet allergy may provide clues when symptoms track with sneezing, nasal congestion, cleaning or animal contact. Light sensitivity is less typical of uncomplicated itch and can occur when the corneal surface is irritated, the eye is inflamed, or a headache condition is present. The symptom pattern does not establish a diagnosis by itself.

Move away from smoke, dust, pets or other suspected triggers and wash your hands and face. Use a cool compress over closed eyes, lower screen brightness and rest your eyes. Avoid rubbing, contact lenses and eye makeup until symptoms settle. Do not use leftover antibiotic or steroid drops. A pharmacist can advise on allergy medication or lubricating drops based on your symptoms and medicines.

Seek urgent help for severe eye pain, reduced or changed vision, a very red eye, injury, chemical exposure, severe headache with vomiting, or swelling of the face or throat. Arrange prompt medical review when light sensitivity persists, symptoms are mainly in one eye, or pain develops. Contact lens users should not delay advice if redness, pain or vision change appears.

Ask whether the light sensitivity suggests surface irritation or deeper inflammation, whether your cornea and vision need checking, and which treatment is suitable. Describe the timing, triggers, discharge, headache, contact lens use and any recent eye product or injury.
