What should you know about eyes are super itchy?

Allergic conjunctivitis can make both eyes itch, water, and look red, especially after contact with pollen, dust, or another trigger. Allergic rhinitis may add sneezing, a blocked nose, or a runny nose. House dust mite allergy can be worse indoors or around bedding, while pet allergy may flare after contact with an animal or its dander.

A gritty feeling can also come from dry air, smoke, cosmetics, contact lenses, or rubbing. Itching alone does not identify one cause, so the pattern, timing, and other symptoms matter.

Do not rub your eyes; rubbing can increase irritation and swelling. Wash your hands, remove contact lenses, and rinse away an obvious irritant with clean lukewarm water. A cool, clean compress over closed eyelids may soothe the urge to scratch. Reduce exposure to smoke, dust, and suspected allergens, and keep bedroom fabrics clean if symptoms are strongest at home.

A pharmacist or clinician can explain whether allergy medication is suitable for you, including any eye treatment. Avoid sharing eye drops and do not use someone else’s prescription.

Arrange prompt medical care for significant eye pain, light sensitivity, reduced or blurred vision, injury, chemical exposure, pus-like discharge, or swelling that is rapidly worsening. Seek urgent help if the eyelids or area around the eye become very swollen, or if breathing difficulty or facial swelling occurs with the itching.

If symptoms keep returning, affect one eye persistently, or do not settle after avoiding triggers, book an examination to check the eye surface and identify a cause.
