What should you know about eyelid slightly droopy?

Short answer
A slightly droopy eyelid may come from extra skin or another eyelid problem, so a new or changing droop deserves assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible cause
- Extra upper-eyelid skin or muscle-related droop
- Track
- Timing, symmetry and any vision change
- Urgent concern
- Sudden drooping with neurological or visual symptoms
What mild drooping can represent
Extra upper-eyelid skin, known as dermatochalasis, can create a hooded appearance and sometimes weigh on the lid. A lower brow position, eyelid muscle weakness, swelling or an unequal lid position can look similar. [Sagging Skin](/symptoms/sagging-skin/) elsewhere does not establish the cause of an eyelid change. A clinician compares both eyes, checks lid movement and asks whether the change is gradual or sudden.
A long-standing, stable difference may be mainly cosmetic, while a new droop with double vision, unequal pupils, weakness or headache needs prompt medical attention. The description alone cannot identify the underlying cause.
Practical next steps
Take a clear photograph in relaxed facial expression and another looking straight ahead if you want to track change. Record when the droop appears, whether it varies through the day and whether vision is obstructed. Do not tape, pull or inject the eyelid yourself. After examination, options may include observation, treating an underlying issue, or a procedure such as [Eyelid Surgery](/treatments/surgical-dermatology/blepharoplasty/). Selected patients may discuss [Plasma Pen Treatment](/treatments/laser-and-energy/plasma-pen-treatment/) or [Radiofrequency Skin Tightening](/treatments/laser-and-energy/radiofrequency-skin-tightening/) when loose skin is the main concern.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical assessment for sudden drooping, new double vision, loss of vision, severe headache, facial weakness, unequal pupils or trouble speaking. Arrange a routine eye or medical review when the lid gradually worsens, blocks part of your sight, causes brow strain or becomes asymmetrical.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the droop is from skin, muscle, brow position or swelling; whether your vision is affected; and which options fit your eye health. Ask how treatment could affect eyelid closure, dryness and symmetry, and what change should trigger an earlier review.

Questions people ask
Is a slightly droopy eyelid always dermatochalasis?
No. Extra skin is one possibility; muscle, brow and medical causes can look alike.
Can skin-tightening treatment lift a droopy eyelid?
It may help selected loose-skin concerns, but examination is needed before choosing treatment.
