Eye stye meaning: understanding the lump

A stye, or hordeolum, commonly appears as a sore red bump at the eyelid edge, sometimes with a small spot near an eyelash. The lid may feel swollen, gritty, or sensitive to touch. An inner stye can feel deeper in the eyelid and may be harder to see. A stye is a local eyelid problem; it is different from redness affecting the whole eye.

Use a clean warm compress on the closed eyelid for several minutes at a time. Repeat it during the day, using a fresh clean cloth. Do not pop the lump, rub the eye, or apply someone else’s drops. Avoid contact lenses and eye makeup while the eyelid is sore, and wash your hands before and after touching the area.

Arrange prompt care if swelling extends beyond the eyelid, redness spreads, vision changes, or the pain is increasing rather than easing. Seek urgent help for severe eye pain, reduced vision, double vision, or pain with eye movement. A persistent, firm, bleeding, or repeatedly returning lump needs a clinician’s review.
