What should you know about eye pruritus?

Itching can accompany atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, psoriasis or lichen planus. Dry, cracked skin such as asteatotic eczema may sting as well as itch. Hives can cause raised, transient welts, while scabies tends to produce intense itching that may affect other household members. A skin yeast infection is another possible diagnosis in a moist, irritated fold, though the eye area needs careful examination. The pattern, duration and visible changes help separate these conditions.

Avoid rubbing, fragranced products, eye makeup and any new cream that preceded the flare. Apply a cool clean compress and keep the area gently moisturised with a product suitable for eyelid skin. Do not use steroid, antifungal or other medicated cream close to the eye unless prescribed for that location. Wash hands before touching the area and avoid sharing towels.

Arrange a clinical review if itching lasts, keeps returning, disturbs sleep or is accompanied by a rash elsewhere. Seek urgent care for eye pain, vision change, marked swelling, pus, fever, facial swelling or trouble breathing. These signs may indicate eye involvement or a significant allergic reaction.

Ask whether the itch is coming from eyelid skin or the eye itself, which products should be avoided and whether allergy, eczema, infection or another condition needs treatment. Mention new cosmetics, medicines, pets, travel and itching in close contacts.
