What should you know about eye lichen planus?

Lichen planus is an inflammatory condition that may affect skin, scalp, nails, or moist linings such as the mouth. Around the eye, it may appear as violet, brownish, red, or scaly patches and small bumps. Itching can be strong, and rubbing may worsen irritation or injure delicate eyelid skin. A rash near the eye has several possible causes, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Tell the clinician about mouth soreness, genital symptoms, nail changes, or a new medicine, because these details can help guide assessment.

Book a dermatology review for a persistent or spreading rash. Treatment may use topical corticosteroids for selected skin areas; oral corticosteroid treatment may be considered when inflammation is extensive or severe. Use medicines exactly as directed and keep products away from the eye unless prescribed for that purpose. A cool compress and fragrance-free cleanser may reduce irritation; avoid scratching and eye makeup during a flare.

Get prompt care for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred vision, pronounced swelling, discharge, fever, or trouble opening or closing the eye. Seek review sooner if the rash spreads rapidly, blisters, or becomes painful rather than itchy.

Ask what is causing the rash, whether the eye surface is affected, where a steroid can safely be applied, how long treatment should continue, and whether other body sites need examination.
