What should you know about eye itching for days?

A lingering itch may follow continued exposure to dust, pollen, smoke, skincare, makeup, or contact-lens products. Contact dermatitis and atopic dermatitis can keep the eyelid skin dry, scaly, and irritated even after the original trigger is hard to remember. Hives may cause intermittent swelling. Infection is more likely to need examination when there is tenderness, warmth, crusting, sticky discharge, or increasing redness. Itching alone cannot identify the cause.

Consider whether both eyes are affected, whether the itch is on the skin or under the lids, and whether symptoms improve away from a particular place or product. Bring a list of eye products and medicines to an appointment.

Stop newly introduced eye cosmetics and skincare, avoid smoke and known irritants, and use a cool clean compress. Do not rub, scratch, or share towels. Remove contact lenses and use glasses until the eye feels normal or a clinician advises otherwise. Avoid using leftover prescription drops, especially products containing steroids, because the wrong treatment can obscure or worsen some eye problems.

Seek urgent care for eye pain, reduced or blurred vision, severe light sensitivity, pain with eye movement, marked swelling, injury, fever, or rapidly spreading redness. Arrange a routine medical review if the itch continues despite removing triggers, repeatedly returns, or is accompanied by discharge or a rash elsewhere.

Ask whether the symptoms fit allergy, dermatitis, infection, or a surface-eye problem; which products to stop; and what treatment is safe for the eyelid and eye.
