Eye discharge in the morning: what it means

Short answer
Eye discharge in the morning may be harmless overnight buildup, but repeated crusting with redness, pain, or vision change needs medical advice.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Overnight buildup
- Blinking pauses during sleep, allowing material to collect.
- Clean, do not pull
- Soften crusts with lukewarm water first.
Why it appears after sleep
Blinking stops during sleep, so tears, skin oils, mucus, and small particles can collect at the eyelid edges. Mild crusting that clears after washing may not signal a serious problem. Itching and watery eyes can occur with Allergic Conjunctivitis. Redness, soreness, and sticky discharge can occur with Conjunctivitis. The colour and amount of discharge are useful details, but they do not confirm its cause.
Start the day gently
Wash your hands, then soften crusts with a clean cloth and lukewarm water rather than pulling them away. Wipe from the inner corner toward the outer corner and use a clean section for each pass. Wash pillowcases and towels regularly, and avoid sharing them. Leave contact lenses and eye makeup out while discharge or irritation continues. Artificial tears may help dryness when a pharmacist or clinician says they are suitable.
When morning discharge is a concern
Seek urgent assessment for pain with reduced vision, intense light sensitivity, a foreign body that will not wash out, chemical exposure, or an eye injury. Contact a clinician promptly if discharge is increasing, the eye remains red during the day, symptoms spread to the other eye, or the problem keeps returning. Contact-lens users with a red or painful eye should stop wearing lenses and seek prompt advice.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the pattern fits dryness, allergy, blocked drainage, or infection, and whether you need an examination or a change in eye-care products.

Questions people ask
Why are my eyes sticky when I wake up?
Tears, oils, and mucus can collect overnight, although persistent stickiness may have another cause.
Is morning eye discharge contagious?
Some causes can spread through hands and towels, so handwashing and avoiding shared linens are sensible.
