Eye discharge home remedies: what to know

A small amount of dried material after sleep can come from normal tears and oils. Watery discharge with itching may occur with Allergic Conjunctivitis, while thicker discharge, redness, or eyelids sticking together can occur with Conjunctivitis. A home remedy can soothe the surface but cannot identify the cause or replace an examination when the eye is painful or vision is affected.

Wash your hands before and after touching the eye. Use clean cotton or a freshly washed soft cloth moistened with lukewarm water, wiping from the inner corner outward; use a new part of the cloth for each wipe and do not share towels. A cool, clean compress may ease itching or irritation. Pause contact lenses and eye makeup until the eye is comfortable and clear. Do not use another person’s drops or leftover antibiotic medicine.

Seek urgent assessment for severe pain, marked light sensitivity, reduced or blurred vision, an eye injury, chemical exposure, or a swollen eye with fever. Arrange prompt medical advice when discharge is heavy, symptoms are worsening, the eye is very red, or a contact-lens wearer develops pain or redness. A clinician can decide whether drops or another treatment is appropriate.
