Eye discharge and pain: what to know

Mild stinging can follow dryness, smoke, dust, or rubbing, and watery discharge may occur with irritation. Conjunctivitis can present with discharge and discomfort, while allergic conjunctivitis more often brings itching and watering. Pain that feels deep, becomes strong, or occurs with light sensitivity is more concerning than mild surface grittiness. Contact lenses can increase the need for prompt assessment because a problem on the cornea may worsen without early treatment. The type of discharge, one-eye or two-eye involvement, and any vision change help guide the examination.

Stop wearing contact lenses and eye makeup. Rinse away loose material with clean water or sterile saline, without touching the bottle tip to the eye. A clean cool compress may ease surface discomfort; use a separate cloth for each eye. Wash hands often and avoid rubbing. Do not patch the eye, share towels, or put non-prescribed drops into it, particularly drops left from an earlier problem.

Seek urgent eye care for severe or worsening pain, reduced or blurred vision, light sensitivity, a cloudy-looking eye, marked swelling, an injury, or a chemical exposure. Contact-lens wearers with pain and discharge should obtain prompt medical advice even if symptoms seem limited. If symptoms are mild but continue or recur, arrange a clinician review rather than relying on repeated self-treatment.
