What should you know about extremely itchy pubic area?

A new shaving product, soap, detergent, adhesive, or fabric can cause contact dermatitis on the pubic skin. Dry, cracked, itchy skin can occur with asteatotic eczema, while atopic dermatitis may affect people with a history of sensitive or eczema-prone skin. Psoriasis or lichen planus may produce persistent, well-defined or discoloured patches. Scabies can cause intense itch, often worse at night, with small bumps and symptoms in other household members. Hives tend to appear as raised areas that move or fade, while a yeast infection may prefer warm, moist folds.

Do not diagnose the cause from location alone. Note whether the skin is dry, scaly, ring-shaped, blistered, cracked, swollen, or oozing, and record recent products, shaving, travel, and close skin contact.

Wash gently, avoid scrubbing and fragranced products, and pat the area dry. Wear loose clothing and pause shaving, waxing, and new topical products until the skin is calm. A cool compress may reduce the urge to scratch; keep nails short to limit skin damage. Do not apply household antiseptics or multiple creams at once, since they can irritate the area and make the rash harder to assess.

Arrange a clinician review when the itch is intense, lasts beyond a short period, spreads, or keeps returning. Bring the names or photos of products used and mention whether anyone close has similar symptoms.

Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, pus, open sores, blisters, marked swelling, or difficulty passing urine. Arrange an appointment for a persistent patch, bleeding, a new growth, night-time itch with household symptoms, or any concern after sexual exposure. Urgent care is appropriate if swelling is sudden or affects breathing.

Ask which features point toward eczema, infection, scabies, or another inflammatory condition; whether an examination or skin test is needed; and which treatment is safe for this sensitive area. Mention pregnancy, medicines, allergies, shaving, and recent intimate contact.
