Extreme headache during pregnancy: what should you know?

Pregnancy can change sleep, hydration, appetite, posture, and sensitivity to light. Migraine, a viral illness, sinus congestion, or dehydration can also cause strong pain. A severe headache is not proof of a particular condition, so the timing and accompanying symptoms matter.

After the middle of pregnancy, clinicians take new severe pain, visual disturbance, swelling, upper abdominal pain, or raised blood pressure especially seriously because these can signal a pregnancy-related complication. Only an assessment can distinguish these possibilities.

Sit or lie in a quiet, cool place, drink fluids in small amounts, and eat if you have missed a meal. Note your blood pressure if you have been given a monitor and record the reading with the time. Check every medicine, including herbal products, with your maternity team before taking it.

Contact your obstetric or maternity service today about a severe, new, or ongoing headache. Mention fever, congestion, vomiting, recent heat exposure, and reduced fluid intake; Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion can intensify head pain.

Seek emergency care for sudden maximum-intensity pain, fainting, seizure, confusion, weakness, difficulty speaking, severe breathlessness, chest pain, sudden vision loss, or a stiff neck with fever. Get urgent maternity advice for flashing lights, blurred vision, marked swelling, upper abdominal pain, or a headache that does not improve with rest.

Do not wait for a routine appointment when symptoms are rapidly worsening. Take your pregnancy details and medicine list with you, and ask someone else to drive if you feel unwell.

Ask whether your blood pressure and urine need checking, which pain relief is appropriate at your stage of pregnancy, whether the baby needs monitoring, and which symptoms should prompt immediate return.
