What should you know about extreme folliculitis?

Folliculitis is inflammation around a hair follicle. It may look like clusters of red bumps, pus-filled spots, tenderness, crusting, or itch. Friction, shaving, waxing, tight clothing, sweat, occlusion, and bacteria or yeast can contribute. Ingrown hairs can produce a similar bump, so appearance alone cannot identify the cause. Scalp, beard, chest, back, buttocks, and groin involvement may need different care.

Pause shaving, waxing, and picking while the skin is inflamed. Wash gently, keep the area dry, wear loose breathable clothing, and do not share towels or razors. A clinician can decide whether culture, an antiseptic wash, topical antibiotic therapy, or antibiotics for a skin infection is appropriate. Do not use leftover antibiotics or squeeze lesions, because that can worsen irritation and spread infection.

Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, increasing warmth, severe pain, fever, chills, red streaks, a large draining lump, or lesions near the eye. Arrange a dermatology visit when outbreaks recur, scar, leave hair loss, or fail to settle with gentle care. People with diabetes or reduced immunity should seek advice earlier when infection is suspected.
