What should you know about extreme dandruff on scalp?

Dandruff is shedding of scalp skin. Seborrheic dermatitis can cause more noticeable scale, itch, and inflammation, often around the hairline, eyebrows, ears, or sides of the nose as well as the scalp. Product buildup, fragrance, hair dye, or frequent scratching may add irritation. Thick, sharply defined plaques, pain, oozing, broken hairs, or patchy hair loss can point to a different diagnosis and should be assessed rather than assumed to be ordinary dandruff.

The amount of visible flaking does not identify one cause by itself. A clinician may examine the scale, skin, and hair pattern before choosing treatment.

Wash the scalp regularly with a gentle cleanser and avoid scratching or lifting scale with the nails. A clinician or pharmacist may suggest a medicated shampoo; use it on the scalp for the instructed contact time, since rinsing it immediately can reduce its effect. If inflammation or suspected yeast activity is prominent, topical antifungal treatment may be considered. Stop any product that stings or causes a new rash, and keep a note of triggers such as sweating, stress, or a newly introduced product.

Arrange a dermatology review when flaking is extensive, repeatedly returns, or remains troublesome despite correct shampoo use. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, pus, marked swelling, fever, painful cracks, or sudden areas of hair loss. These findings may reflect infection, significant inflammation, or another scalp disorder that needs targeted treatment.

Ask whether the pattern fits dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis, how often to use a medicated shampoo, whether antifungal treatment is appropriate, and which symptoms should trigger an earlier review.
