Extreme body aches: possible causes and next steps

Aches may follow a viral illness such as influenza or COVID-19, especially with fever, tiredness, headache, cough, or sore throat. Travel, animal exposure, or unwell contacts can change which infections a clinician considers, including malaria, dengue fever, or brucellosis. Aches that persist without an acute illness may occur with fibromyalgia, an underactive thyroid, medication effects, or muscle strain. Body aches alone cannot identify the cause.

Rest, drink fluids, and keep activity gentle while you monitor the pattern. Check your temperature if you feel feverish and note rash, cough, diarrhoea, joint swelling, weakness, recent exercise, travel, insect bites, or new medicines. Ask a pharmacist which pain relief is suitable for you, particularly if you have kidney, liver, stomach, or bleeding problems.

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, a stiff neck, a new widespread rash, chest pain, very dark urine, or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange medical review for persistent or worsening aches, repeated fever, swollen joints, unexplained weight change, or symptoms after travel to a malaria area.
