What should you know about external hordeolum treatment?

An external hordeolum, commonly called a stye, is a tender, localised swelling at the edge of an eyelid. It can form near an eyelash when an eyelid gland or follicle becomes blocked and inflamed. The lid may look red, feel sore, and develop a small point of discharge. It is different from a deeper, usually firmer eyelid lump. Eye discharge or a red eye can have other causes, so the surrounding symptoms matter.

Hold a clean, comfortably warm cloth against the closed eyelid for several minutes, repeating this through the day. Use a fresh area of cloth each time and avoid squeezing, piercing, or rubbing the lump. Wash your hands before touching the eye, pause eye makeup and contact lenses while the lid is irritated, and do not share towels. A pharmacist or GP can advise whether a prescribed treatment is appropriate; do not use another person’s eye drops.

Arrange a GP Consultation if the swelling does not begin to settle, keeps returning, or is interfering with daily activities. Seek urgent assessment for reduced or blurred vision, marked pain inside the eye, fever, swelling spreading around the eye, pain when moving the eye, or difficulty opening it. These features can indicate a problem beyond a simple eyelid stye.

Ask whether the lump is an external hordeolum or another eyelid condition, whether any medicine is needed, and how long to continue eyelid care. Mention contact-lens use, repeated episodes, discharge, vision changes, and any skin or eye conditions.
