What should you know about mumps?

Swelling may affect one or both sides of the face. Fever, headache, tiredness, muscle aches, dry mouth and pain when chewing or swallowing can occur. Some infected people have mild symptoms or none, but they may still spread the virus through respiratory droplets and saliva.

A clinician assesses the pattern and vaccination history; testing may be considered when mumps is suspected. Other infections can also cause [Swollen Glands](/symptoms/swollen-glands/), so facial swelling alone does not establish the diagnosis.

Rest, drink fluids and choose soft foods if chewing hurts. Do not share cups, utensils or towels, and follow local advice about staying away from school, work and close contact while contagious.
