Short answer

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that can cause fever and a spreading rash, so suspected cases need prompt medical advice.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Cause
Measles virus
Typical pattern
Fever and respiratory symptoms followed by a spreading rash
Protective step
MMR vaccination

Recognising measles

Measles commonly begins with fever, cough, a runny nose and red, watery eyes. Small spots may appear inside the mouth, followed by a rash that starts on the face or hairline and moves down the body. Swollen glands can occur, but many illnesses cause fever and rash, so appearance alone cannot confirm measles. The virus spreads through respiratory droplets and can remain in an indoor space after an infected person leaves. Someone who may have measles should call ahead before visiting a clinic, helping staff protect other patients.

What to do next

Contact a GP Consultation service before attending in person if you have fever and a new rash or have been exposed to measles. Mention vaccination history, recent travel and contact with a suspected case. Rest, drink fluids and follow advice about fever relief; do not give medicines to children unless the product and dose are suitable for them. Avoid school, work and close contact until a clinician explains when it is safe to return. MMR Vaccination is the main preventive measure and can be discussed when records are incomplete.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, severe drowsiness, confusion, dehydration, a seizure, severe headache, stiff neck or a child who is difficult to wake. Call ahead about a possible measles exposure so you can be directed safely. Babies, pregnant people and anyone with reduced immune protection should seek advice promptly after exposure or symptom onset.

Questions for your doctor

Could this rash be measles or another infection? How should I isolate, and when can I return to normal activities? Do I need testing or monitoring for complications? Are my MMR Vaccination records complete, and should household contacts seek advice?

Questions people ask

Should I walk into a clinic if I suspect measles?

Call ahead first, because measles spreads easily and the clinic can arrange a safer assessment route.

Can a rash alone confirm measles?

No. Other infections can cause fever and rash, so clinical assessment and exposure history are needed.
