Exhaustion in late pregnancy

Short answer
Exhaustion in late pregnancy is often linked to reduced sleep and increased physical demands, but persistent or sudden fatigue should be reviewed.

Why late pregnancy can feel exhausting
Your changing body may make sleep uncomfortable, while back or pelvic pain, heartburn and frequent urination interrupt rest. Carrying extra weight can make ordinary tasks more demanding. Anaemia, dehydration, infection, low mood and thyroid or other health problems can also contribute. Fatigue is common in pregnancy, but its severity and associated symptoms determine whether testing is useful.
Ways to conserve energy
Plan demanding tasks for the time of day when you have more energy, take regular seated breaks and accept help with shopping, meals and household work. Keep fluids nearby, eat regularly and use comfortable pillows for sleep. Gentle activity can support mobility if your maternity team has not advised restrictions. Continue prescribed supplements and avoid adding medicines without checking first.
When to contact your maternity team
Contact your maternity team urgently for severe headache, visual changes, sudden swelling, upper abdominal pain, breathlessness at rest, chest pain, fainting, fever, bleeding, leaking fluid, regular contractions or reduced baby movements. Emergency help is needed for collapse or severe breathing difficulty. Book a review if exhaustion stops you managing basic activities or remains unexplained despite rest.
Useful questions to ask
Ask whether your blood pressure, urine or blood count should be checked, and whether your sleep, pain or supplements need adjustment. Explain how long the fatigue has lasted, whether it is worsening, and any changes in appetite, mood, breathing or baby movements.
