Exhaustion during pregnancy: what to know

Short answer
Feeling exhausted during pregnancy is common, but persistent or severe fatigue deserves a check for treatable causes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Fatigue that persists, worsens or limits ordinary activities
What it can mean
Pregnancy changes hormones, circulation, sleep, appetite and the effort required by everyday activities. Nausea, interrupted sleep, emotional strain and carrying more weight can all reduce your available energy. Anaemia may also present with fatigue in pregnancy, particularly when it comes with breathlessness, paleness, dizziness or a racing heartbeat. A clinician can review your symptoms and decide whether blood tests or another assessment is appropriate.
Ways to manage low energy
Rest before you are completely spent, accept practical help and keep the day’s essential tasks small. Eat regular meals or snacks with nourishing foods, drink to thirst, and use gentle movement if it feels comfortable. Protect a regular sleep routine and mention persistent nausea, low mood or poor sleep at your antenatal appointment. Do not start iron or other supplements beyond those advised for your pregnancy.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity team promptly if fatigue is sudden, worsening, or stops you managing basic activities. Seek urgent help for fainting, chest pain, severe breathlessness, heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, confusion, or inability to keep fluids down. Fever or symptoms of infection also warrant medical advice. Fatigue alongside marked thirst or very little urine should be assessed for dehydration.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit the stage of pregnancy, whether anaemia or another condition should be checked, and which activity, sleep and supplement advice suits you. Share when the exhaustion began, how it affects daily life, your sleep quality, diet, medicines and any dizziness or breathlessness.
