Exertional angina meaning: what should you know?

Short answer
Exertional angina means heart-related chest discomfort brought on by increased effort when the heart needs more oxygen.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the pattern works
During walking uphill, climbing stairs, or other effort, the heart works harder. If the coronary arteries cannot deliver enough oxygen-rich blood, pressure, tightness, heaviness, or burning may occur in the chest. Discomfort can spread to an arm, shoulder, jaw, back, or neck and may occur with breathlessness, sweating, or nausea. It often eases with rest, but that pattern does not make it safe to ignore.
High blood pressure can contribute to cardiovascular strain. Chest tightness has many possible causes, so a clinician needs to interpret the timing, triggers, examination, and medical history together.
What to do about it
Stop and rest when symptoms begin; do not push through them or drive yourself for assessment. If you have prescribed angina medicine, use it exactly as instructed. Arrange prompt medical review for new, recurrent, or changing exertional discomfort. Assessment may include an ECG and checks of blood pressure, cholesterol, medicines, and other cardiovascular risks. Treatment might involve prescribed blood-pressure medicine or statin therapy when suitable.
When to seek emergency help
Call emergency services if discomfort is severe, lasts longer than expected, occurs at rest, returns quickly, or comes with breathlessness, fainting, cold sweat, marked weakness, or nausea. Treat sudden chest pressure as an emergency, especially if it spreads to the arm, jaw, back, or neck. Do not wait for a routine appointment to clarify these symptoms.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what symptoms should trigger emergency help, which activities are safe, whether you need an ECG or other tests, and how prescribed medicines address blood pressure, cholesterol, or angina.
