What should you know about excruciating left flank pain?

Flank pain is felt between the ribs and hip, often toward the back. A kidney stone can cause severe, wave-like pain that may move toward the groin, sometimes with nausea or blood in the urine. A kidney infection may cause flank pain with fever, chills, feeling ill, or painful and frequent urination. A urinary tract infection can cause urinary symptoms and may spread upward. Muscle strain is another possibility, especially after lifting or twisting, and may worsen with movement or pressing the area. Pain on the left does not identify its cause by itself.

Stop strenuous activity and arrange medical assessment. Sip water if you are able, but do not force fluids if you are vomiting or have been told to restrict intake. Note the pain's start, movement, severity, urinary changes, bowel symptoms, fever, and any chance of pregnancy. Avoid taking leftover antibiotics. Use only pain relief that is suitable for you and follow the label; a pharmacist can help if you take regular medicines or have kidney, stomach, or liver problems.

Go to urgent or emergency care for severe pain with fever or chills, repeated vomiting, inability to pass urine, blood in the urine, fainting, confusion, a rigid or swollen abdomen, or worsening weakness. Seek prompt assessment during pregnancy, with one functioning kidney, known kidney disease, or a history of urinary obstruction. Sudden severe pain that cannot be controlled at home should not be managed by waiting for it to pass.
