Excessive fatigue in pregnancy: what to know

Short answer
Excessive fatigue in pregnancy is often related to normal body changes, but persistent or overwhelming tiredness deserves a pregnancy review.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common contributors
- Sleep disruption, nausea, discomfort and pregnancy-related body changes can drain energy.
- Checkable causes
- Anaemia, thyroid problems, infection and low mood can be assessed clinically.
Why fatigue can happen
Pregnancy changes circulation, hormones, sleep and the physical effort required by everyday activities. Nausea, reflux, discomfort, anxiety and frequent night-time urination can further reduce rest. Anaemia from low iron, thyroid problems, infection or low mood can also contribute to severe fatigue. The tiredness itself does not identify one cause, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms matter.
Your maternity clinician may ask about sleep, diet, mood, breathlessness, palpitations and dizziness. They may check your blood pressure and request blood tests, including tests for anaemia, when appropriate.
Ways to manage it
Rest when possible, simplify demanding tasks and accept practical help. Eat regular nourishing meals, drink fluids, and use gentle activity if your maternity team says it is suitable. Keep appointments and mention fatigue that interferes with work, self-care or caring for your family. If low iron is found, iron therapy may be recommended; take it only as directed because supplements are not interchangeable.
When to contact your maternity team
Contact your maternity team promptly for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, racing or irregular heartbeat, fever, persistent vomiting, severe headache, vision changes, sudden swelling, or reduced fetal movement later in pregnancy. Seek urgent help if you feel unsafe because of low mood or frightening thoughts.
Questions for your doctor
Could anaemia, thyroid disease or infection explain my fatigue? Do I need blood tests? How much activity is suitable? Would iron therapy help, and how should it be taken with my other pregnancy medicines?
